Despite Opposition to Yucca, Reid is "Cool with Nukes"

From newsreview.com:

Senator Harry Reid - “If I have a choice between coal and nuclear, it’s an easy choice to make,” Reid said.

Reid says he prefers renewable alternatives to coal rather than nuclear, and he’s skeptical of federal subsidies for the nuclear power industry. But between coal and nuclear, his choice is nuclear.

That's great to hear. Since we now have a Democratic Congress (which probably won't change for awhile) it is important for the Democratic leaders to recognize the benefits of nuclear power. You can't get much higher than the Senate's Majority Leader.

The problem is not with Yucca Mountain, but instead with how we currently plan to use it. Nevada would be happier if we were to pass legislation that would prevent us from sending spent fuel there, and instead only use Yucca Mountain for defense wastes and residual wastes from reprocessing.

Reprocessing combined with full actinide recycle would reduce the need for repository volume to a fraction of what we're developing at Yucca Mountain. If NV were serious about this issue, we would be seeing some efforts on the part of their legislators to push for this solution. I don't think we've seen it. They seem to be more interested in opposing something rather than resolving the issue.
