I would not get too excited about Australia being a member. According to current opinion polls, the Howard government is likely to be defeated in the general election to be held later this year. The Australian Labor Party is likely to win that election, and there championship of the coal industry, and their antipathy towards the nuclear power industry are well known. The future for Australia's active participation in GNEP is somewhat uncertain.

You never know though, in 1996 the ALP managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory and they may do so again.
