Visiting Davis-Besse

Last Friday, Gary Petersen and a group of parents and students involved in home schooling in the Toledo area visited the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Plant. Congrats to Chip Palazzo and everyone at First Energy for continuing to reach out to the community and tell our industry's story.

Nothing against the fine folks at Besse, but why can't they climb back into their football sized hole and let someone with higher credibilty promote the virtues of nuclear power? Mr. Ahmadinejad is in the U.S. and his experience with peaceful uses of nuclear fission might provide a more believable perspective.

Seriously, I cannot think of a worse face for this industry than FENOC. They 've done more than anyone to damage our reputation and should shut-up.

Thanks for noting my article. The visit was a lot of fun and very informative. I would never have thought that the cooling tower discharged 10,000 gallons of water vapor every hour and that the fuel used for power generation was just 3% or so uranium content.

Chip was great, both in the tour and in catching the article I wrote on my weblog and commenting on it.

I've been in the business of communications for more than 20 years and I can tell you - in all my years in various leadership capacities - I've never been as proud as I am now to represent FENOC and the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station to the communities we serve... and that includes sharing information with enthusiastic students interested in how we generate clean electric power.

The caliber of leadership in place at Davis-Besse and the 800+ who come through these gates every day is second to none. Their commitment to the safe, reliable efficient operation of this plant is evident 24/7/365.

It's a privilege to represent a team whose passion and commitment to doing the right thing IS the priority - as it is across the entire FENOC Fleet.

Fluor Invests in NuScale

You know, it’s kind of sad that no one is willing to invest in nuclear energy anymore. Wait, what? NuScale Power celebrated the news of its company-saving $30 million investment from Fluor Corp. Thursday morning with a press conference in Washington, D.C. Fluor is a design, engineering and construction company involved with some 20 plants in the 70s and 80s, but it has not held interest in a nuclear energy company until now. Fluor, which has deep roots in the nuclear industry, is betting big on small-scale nuclear energy with its NuScale investment. Some positive signs that nuclear utilities can continue to receive positive ratings even while they finance new nuclear plants for the first time in decades: Wells Fargo upgrades SCANA to Outperform from Market Perform Wells analyst says, "YTD, SCG shares have underperformed the Regulated Electrics (total return +2% vs. +9%). Shares trade at 11.3X our 10E EPS, a modest discount to the peer group median of 11.8X. We view the valuation as attractive given a comparatively constructive regulatory environment and potential for above-average long-term EPS growth prospects ... Comfortable with Nuclear Strategy.
